Lithium niobate waveguides can be made by proton exchange: crystal reacts with a suitable proton source, such as benzoic acid, replacing surface lithium ions with hydrogen ions. Annealing restores optical nonlinearity, producing Annealed Proton-Exchange (APE) waveguides. Reverse Proton Exchange (RPE) follows annealing, replacing hydrogen with lithium to improve hydrogen distribution, eigenmode symmetry and mode matching across wavelengths. Periodic poling applies an electric field to reverse ferroelectric spontaneous polarization periodically for quasi-phase matching and frequency conversion. PPLN RPE waveguides at the 1550nm telecom band achieve propagation loss as low as 0.1dB/cm and fiber coupling loss as low as 0.5dB, reaching leading international performance.
