LCS Helium-Neon Laser
Entirely domestically manufactured He-Ne laser; assembled rather than blown construction; source for single-frequency interferometers; power>0.8mW; life>20000h; good consistency. He-Ne was the first gas laser to achieve oscillation. Output comprises Ne lines in visible/infrared bands, strongest at 0.6328μm, 1.15μm and 3.39μm. Suppressing two selects the desired wavelength; visible632.8nm red is widely used. Good monochromaticity and directionality, stable controllable power/wavelength, simple construction and low cost suit precision metrology, inspection, alignment, information processing, medicine and optics experiments. A glass tube provides excellent gas sealing. He-Ne is low power: Discharge tubes tens of centimeters long yield around milliwatts, while1~2m tubes reach tens to hundreds of milliwatts. Its discharge-excitation process, manufacturing and design methods inform other gas lasers. Single-frequency interferometers use dual-longitudinal-mode thermal stabilization. The roughly1GHz mode spacing exceeds signal-processor subdivision capability, so a polarizer discards one mode. Only the transmitted single mode is used for homodyne amplitude-modulation measurement.
