1. Overview
Driven by the rapid upgrading of industrial automation, high-precision displacement sensing technology has become a core foundation of intelligent manufacturing. As an electromagnetic precision measuring component, the Linear Variable Differential Transformer (LVDT) features high accuracy, excellent dynamic response, stable operation and convenient integration. It is widely adopted in aerospace, machinery manufacturing, construction, textile, railway, coal, metallurgy, chemical engineering and scientific research institutes for the measurement of elongation, vibration, thickness, thermal expansion and other physical parameters.
Shenzhen SOWAY Technology Development Co., Ltd. specializes in the R&D and mass production of high-precision position sensors. The company’s full-series LVDT products include split type, spring-return type, pneumatic type, pressure-resistant type and customized solutions. With high measurement accuracy, stable performance, waterproof, dustproof and impact-resistant characteristics, SOWAY LVDTs adapt to harsh industrial environments and deliver reliable sensing support for automated inspection and control systems.

2. Working Principle
LVDT (Linear Variable Differential Transformer) is a movable-core electromagnetic sensor consisting of one primary coil, two symmetric secondary coils, a movable iron core, a coil frame and a protective housing. Based on electromagnetic induction, the primary coil generates a stable alternating magnetic field when excited by AC voltage at a fixed frequency.

Axial movement of the iron core changes the mutual inductance between primary and secondary coils, generating differential induced electromotive force in the two secondary windings. With reverse polarity design of the secondary coils, the output differential voltage presents a highly linear relationship with core displacement, realizing the conversion from mechanical displacement to standard electrical signals.

When the core moves rightward, the induced voltage of the secondary secondary coil increases; when moving leftward, the primary secondary coil dominates. Within the rated measuring range, the voltage difference changes linearly with displacement, while linearity declines beyond the stroke limit. The symmetric structure ensures stable electrical zero-point and 180° phase difference between positive and negative strokes, enabling accurate direction identification. In practical industrial applications, coils are fixed with the housing while the core is connected with the measuring rod, outputting continuous and stable displacement signals through relative motion.
3. Core Performance Characteristics
1. Non-contact and Friction-free Measurement
No physical contact or friction exists between the core and coils, eliminating mechanical wear and measurement errors. It is ideal for precision tests such as material deflection, vibration detection and creep measurement of high-elastic materials.
2. Ultra-long Mechanical Service Life
The friction-free working mode results in zero mechanical fatigue loss, offering theoretically infinite service life. It is highly suitable for fatigue testing, aerospace equipment, military devices and high-reliability industrial systems, reducing maintenance and replacement costs.
3. Ultra-high Infinite Resolution
LVDT can capture micro-displacement changes at sub-micron level with nearly infinite inherent resolution. The measuring limit is only determined by the resolution of the rear-end acquisition circuit, supporting ultra-precision industrial detection.
4. Excellent Zero-point Repeatability and Stability
The symmetric structural design ensures precise zero-point reset, high repeatability and low long-term drift, serving as an ideal zero-reference component for closed-loop control systems.
5. Axial Sensitivity and Radial Insensitivity
LVDT is highly sensitive to axial displacement and immune to radial deviation, enabling measurement of non-straight moving components such as Bourdon tube pressure displacement structures.
6. Fully Isolated Input and Output
As a transformer-based sensor, LVDT provides complete electrical isolation between excitation input and signal output. Standard analog signals can be output without additional amplifiers, ensuring high safety and convenient integration in isolated measurement and control loops.
7. Robust Industrial Structure
Adopting industrial-grade materials and integrated packaging technology, LVDT resists strong impact and high-frequency vibration. The separated core-coil structure isolates the coil assembly from high-pressure, corrosive and alkaline media, realizing reliable static sealing and strong environmental durability.
8. Powerful Environmental Adaptability
Sealed stainless steel LVDTs stably operate in humid, dusty, corrosive, cryogenic and nuclear radiation environments, applicable to almost all harsh industrial scenarios.
9. Advantages Compared with Grating and Magnetic Grating Sensors
LVDT features faster dynamic response up to 300Hz, supporting high-speed online measurement and real-time automatic control, while grating sensors are mostly limited to static measurement. It works stably under strong magnetic fields, heavy current, high humidity and dusty conditions. Customized LVDTs support high-temperature, high-pressure, radiation-resistant and fully sealed underwater operation. With high shock and vibration resistance, compact size and high cost performance, LVDTs are more suitable for large-scale industrial applications.
4. Scientific LVDT Selection Guidelines
1. Measuring Range: Multiple specifications from 2.5mm to 500mm are available. Select the range closest to the actual stroke to ensure optimal accuracy.
2. Signal Output: Supports 4-20mA, 0-5V, 0-10V and RS485 digital output. Current or digital output is recommended for long-distance transmission and multi-device networking.
3. Linearity Error: The relative linear error index ensures accurate absolute displacement calculation for precision measurement scenarios.
4. Resolution: The maximum resolution reaches 0.01μm, far exceeding traditional magnetic scales, with 16-bit high-precision digital output.
5. Working Environment: Customizable high/low temperature resistance, pressure resistance, waterproof, dustproof, oil-proof and anti-EMI models adapt to complex industrial conditions.
6. Probe Structure: Split fixed type for drilled installation and spring-return type for surface contact measurement.
7. Dynamic Response: The maximum frequency reaches 300Hz; high-frequency scenarios require dedicated high-response models instead of conventional spring-return types.
8. Installation Method: Custom fixtures and structural sizes are available for non-standard equipment integration.
