a-BBO
α-BBO is an excellent birefringent crystal material and a negative uniaxial crystal. It has a very large birefringence coefficient and good transmittance from 189nm in the ultraviolet to 3500nm in the mid-infrared. Unlike ß-BBO, due to its centrosymmetric crystal structure, α-BBO does not possess nonlinear optical properties and therefore cannot be used as a nonlinear crystal. α-BBO crystal has good internal quality, low absorption, good mechanical properties and a high damage threshold. Because of its excellent ultraviolet transmission, it is widely used in Glan prism polarizers, birefringent polarizing beam splitters, etc.
