Polarization Beam splitter prism
The polarizing beam-splitter prism divides incident unpolarized light into two orthogonal linearly polarized beams. P-polarized light is fully transmitted, while S-polarized light is reflected at 45°, emerging at 90° to the P beam. The prism consists of two cemented, high-precision right-angle prisms, with a dielectric polarizing beam-splitter coating on the hypotenuse of one prism.

A beamsplitter cube is made by cementing two precision right-angle prisms with a suitable interference coating on the hypotenuse. Coating absorption is minimal, and average transmission and reflection are close to 50%, although outputs are partly polarized. For polarization-sensitive applications, choose a polarizing beamsplitter (PBS) or nonpolarizing beamsplitter (NPBS) cube.
