In a LIBS measurement system, the spectrometer generally sends a synchronized trigger to the laser, which focuses a pulse onto the sample. Within a specified time, collection optics direct the returning light into a multichannel spectrometer, such as the Jianzhi Technology SR75C fiber-spectrometer series. A computer processes the collected data, displays spectra and determines elemental identities and concentrations. LIBS relies on laser-material interaction: high-energy-density pulses rapidly excite the sample surface to form plasma, whose spectrum provides sample information. The process is very fast and suitable for rapid on-site analysis.

Environmental monitoring: atmospheric and marine pollutants. Materials analysis: steel, aerospace, minerals, petroleum and geological exploration. Medical diagnostics: biological tissues and pharmaceutical analysis. Cultural heritage: analysis of historic-building materials and identification of artworks. Other applications: agriculture and forestry inspection, industrial sorting and recycling, pharmaceuticals, military applications and national defense.
Broad spectral range; high resolution; high signal-to-noise ratio; high sensitivity; real-time analysis; nondestructive testing; simultaneous multielement detection. Diversity of elemental detection: coverage from 180nm to 1100nm allows LIBS systems to detect and analyze many elements. Accuracy of elemental detection: high-resolution spectrometers distinguish fine spectral features of different elements. Trace-element detection: highly sensitive detectors provide detection capability at the ppm (parts-per-million) level. Real-time online elemental analysis: the optimum detection window occurs when continuous background radiation weakens and characteristic elemental lines strengthen; the equipment requires controllable delay on the us scale and controllable integration time on the ms scale.
