MgO:LiNbO₃ Electro-optic crystal
MgO:LiNbO₃, or magnesium-doped lithium niobate, is an electro-optic crystal with good overall performance. It offers a high damage threshold, a broad transparency range, excellent electro-optic properties and good mechanical and chemical properties, making it useful for Pockels cells, Q-switches, phase modulators, optical-waveguide substrates and surface-acoustic-wave (SAW) wafers. MgO-doped LN, typically at 5%, was developed to reduce intrinsic photorefractive effects and enable higher-energy applications. MgO:LiNbO₃ offers particular advantages for NCPM SHG, mixed SFG and optical parametric oscillation of Nd lasers, serving OPO, OPA, quasi-phase-matched doublers and integrated waveguides. Compared with LiNbO₃, MgO:LiNbO₃ offers distinct advantages for NCPM frequency doubling, frequency mixing and optical parametric oscillation in Nd-doped lasers. It can achieve frequency-doubling efficiencies above 65% and 45% in pulsed and continuous Nd:YAG lasers, respectively. MgO:LiNbO₃ electro-optic crystals are widely used in optical parametric oscillation, optical parametric amplification, quasi-phase matching and integrated optical waveguides.
