BGO Electro-optic crystal
BGO, or bismuth germanate with formula Bi₁₂GeO₂₀, is a multifunctional optoelectronic material offering a fast photorefractive response in the visible, together with good piezoelectric, acousto-optic, magneto-optic, optical-rotation and electro-optic properties. Both Bi₄Ge₃O₁₂ and Bi₁₂GeO₂₀ are abbreviated BGO. Bi₄Ge₃O₁₂ is described as a cubic, body-centered hexatetrahedral structure with space group F43m, mainly used as a scintillator. Bi₁₂GeO₂₀ is also described as cubic and body-centered but has space group I23, and is mainly used for its photorefractive and electro-optic effects. Cubic symmetry makes the crystal optically isotropic without an external electric field, with refractive index 2.55 at 510 nm. An applied electric field produces birefringence. BGO offers low dark conductivity, colorless transparency and water insolubility, and can be used in Pockels cells and ultraviolet photorefractive devices.
