BBO Electro-optic crystal
BBO, or barium metaborate with formula BaB₂O₄, is a high-performance electro-optic and nonlinear crystal. Applications include third-, fourth- and fifth-harmonic generation of Nd:YAG lasers at 355nm, 266nm and 213nm, respectively, and second- and third-harmonic generation of Ti:Sapphire amplifiers at 400nm and 266.7nm. BBO offers an extremely broad transmission range, very low absorption, weak piezoelectric ringing, a higher extinction ratio than other electro-optic modulation crystals, a large phase-matching angle, a high optical-damage threshold, a broad temperature-matching range and excellent optical homogeneity. These properties improve laser-output power stability, particularly in Nd:YAG third-harmonic generation. Other applications include OPO configurations, optical parametric oscillators and electro-optic operation from the near-infrared to deep ultraviolet.
