Yttrium calcium oxyborate, YCa₄O(BO₃)₃ (YCOB), is a nonlinear crystal with a nonlinear optical coefficient comparable to those of BBO and LBO. It has stable physical and chemical properties, including resistance to deliquescence, and good machinability. It can be obtained by the pulling method in a relatively short growth cycle and has become one of the most extensively studied nonlinear optical crystals. Its ease of growing large single crystals of high optical quality, broad transmission band, large phase-matching range, high damage threshold, and resistance to deliquescence have made YCOB a focus of frequency-conversion device research. Y can be replaced by most rare-earth activator ions in any proportion, giving the crystal both laser and nonlinear optical properties and allowing it to serve as a self-frequency-doubling laser crystal. The greatest advantage of YCOB is its combination of excellent nonlinear optical absorption and the ability to fabricate large-aperture devices.
