TGG
TGG (terbium gallium garnet), with the chemical formula Tb₃Ga₅O₁₂, is a magneto-optic crystal with good overall performance. It has a high magneto-optic constant, low optical loss, high thermal conductivity, and a high laser damage threshold. TGG single crystals are the best magneto-optic material for making Faraday polarizers and isolators over 400~1100nm, excluding 470~500nm. Their extremely high Verdet constant over 400nm-1100nm, excluding 475-500nm, makes TGG the best-performing and most widely used magneto-optic material for Faraday rotators and isolators. Placing a rod of this material in a strong magnetic field can produce a Faraday rotation angle greater than 45°. This permits construction of a Faraday rotator as the principal component of a Faraday isolator, which transmits light in only one direction.
