KNbO₃ (potassium niobate), abbreviated KN, is one of the most important nonlinear optical crystals. Its nonlinear optical figure of merit, d²/n³, ranks first among oxide crystals. KN has an average refractive index of 2.2, a theoretical reflectance of 14%, and a theoretical transmittance of 86%. It is chemically stable and has a large nonlinear optical coefficient. Direct frequency doubling of an 860nm semiconductor laser (101mW) has produced nearly 40mW of blue light at 430nm. The distinctive properties of KN make it an important part of developing new microlaser applications. Achieving blue lasers is a pressing need, and KN is one of the most suitable materials for generating the second harmonic to realize blue lasers.
