Eu:CaF₂
Europium-doped calcium fluoride crystals (Eu:CaF2) offer transparency over a broad wavelength range, good chemical resistance, a high laser damage threshold, and a low refractive index. CaF2 has strong resistance to mechanical and thermal shock and good machinability. Eu:CaF2 is chemically inert, almost insoluble in water, and insoluble in most organic substances. Its emission peak at 435 nm is well matched to photomultiplier tubes (PMT) and silicon photodiodes (PD). Eu:CaF2 scintillation crystals are ideal for detecting low-energy γ rays and charged particles, particularly β rays. They are widely used in low-energy nuclear-physics experiments, detection of charged ions in nuclear reactors, environmental radiation monitoring, and radiological medical diagnosis.
