The cobalt-doped magnesium aluminate spinel we supply (Co:MgAl₂O₄, also called cobalt spinel) is a Q-switching crystal with excellent overall performance. As a saturable absorber, it is suitable for solid-state lasers operating in the eye-safe 1.5μm band and enables efficient passive Q-switching. Cobalt spinel can produce short nanosecond pulses with high peak power near the eye-safe wavelength of 1.5μm, making it well suited to applications such as laser telemetry. Its features include a large absorption cross section, long service life, uniform cobalt-ion distribution, and a broad absorption bandwidth. Co²⁺:MgAl₂O₄ exhibits a broad absorption band over 1200-1600nm because Co²⁺ ions replace tetrahedrally coordinated Mg²⁺ ions in the lattice. Passive Q-switching with solid-state saturable absorbers offers an attractive route to compact, low-cost nanosecond and subnanosecond pulsed laser sources. Lasers at 1.5μm attract substantial interest in industry and research because of their greater eye safety. Other advantages include good transmission in the atmosphere and fused-silica waveguides and detection with highly sensitive room-temperature photodetectors such as germanium and indium gallium arsenide devices. Consequently, 1.5μm lasers have broad application prospects in ranging, environmental sensing, communication, and medical surgery. With an absorption peak near 1.5μm, cobalt spinel is one of the commonly used materials for Q-switching eye-safe lasers.
