Ce:LuAG
Ce:LuAG scintillation crystal—a scintillating material for high-power laser illumination. As a suitable scintillator and potential phosphor, Ce:LuAG can be used to make white light-emitting diodes. Ce:LuAG single crystals have a higher detection rate than cerium-activated yttrium aluminum garnet (Ce:YAG) with the same structure because of their higher density and effective atomic number. Ce:LuAG also substantially outperforms other phosphors in thermal quenching, and its emission spectrum contains a sufficiently large green component. Ce:LuAG single crystals are widely used as scintillation detectors for γ rays and high-energy particles. The latest generation of Ce:LuAG crystals exhibits a high light yield of up to 26,000 pH / MeV and is considered a potential candidate for PET scanners because its decay time is six times shorter while its density is almost unchanged. Its excellent physical and chemical properties and optical isotropy also make Ce:LuAG a potential optical host material. White-light sources have developed rapidly over the past two decades and show great potential to replace conventional incandescent, fluorescent, and high-intensity discharge lamps. High thermal conductivity, high reliability, and low thermal quenching are essential for color converters in white-light sources. Ce:LuAG color converters are suitable for high-power laser illumination. Using Ce:LuAG phosphors is an effective way to reduce phosphor thermal quenching and achieve a higher color rendering index (CRI). Their high density, high effective atomic number, short decay time, and excellent energy resolution also underpin the widespread use of Ce:LuAG single crystals in scintillation detection of γ rays and high-energy particles.
