Overview
A waveplate, also known as a phase retardation plate, is fabricated from a birefringent material and is an optical device that can produce an additional optical path difference (or phase difference) between two mutually perpendicular light vibrations.
Applications
Waveplates are widely used in lasers, polarization and other equipment.
Key Features
The two mutually orthogonal polarization components passing through the waveplate produce a phase shift, which can be used to adjust the polarization state of the light beam. Common waveplates are made of quartz crystal, mainly half-wave plates and quarter-wave plates: (1) Half-wave plate: After polarized light passes through a half-wave plate, it is still linearly polarized light, but the vibration plane of its resultant vibration is rotated by 2θ relative to the vibration plane of the incident linearly polarized light. (2) Quarter-wave plate: When the angle θ between the incident vibration plane of the polarized light and the optical axis of the waveplate is 45°, the light passing through the quarter-wave plate is circularly polarized light; conversely, when circularly polarized light passes through a quarter-wave plate, it becomes linearly polarized light. When light passes through a quarter-wave plate twice, the effect is equivalent to a half-wave plate. Zero-order waveplate: optical contact or epoxy bonding; high damage threshold; good operating temperature range; high bandwidth. True zero-order waveplate: epoxy bonding; high damage threshold; good operating temperature range; high bandwidth. Low-order (multi-order) waveplate: smaller temperature bandwidth; smaller wavelength bandwidth; high damage threshold. Dual-wavelength waveplate: provides the required phase retardation at two wavelengths. Achromatic waveplate: insensitive to temperature; ultra-wide wavelength bandwidth; two types available: cemented and air-spaced
