Applications

Scenario 1: laser communications—Starlink. The small laser-beam diameter makes high-precision alignment the main challenge in establishing and maintaining a laser communication link. A coarse/fine two-stage system incorporating a fast steering mirror addresses this challenge.

Key Features

The fast steering mirror system supports internal closed-loop, internal open-loop, external closed-loop and external open-loop control. Its direct function in an optical system is to deflect the beam. The mirror uses a flexure-hinge mechanism driven by piezoelectric actuators, providing fast response, high resolution, long mechanism life and good stability. It is widely used in scanning, tracking, image stabilization and free-space optical communications.
