A polarizing beamsplitter prism is formed by cementing a pair of high-precision right-angle prisms. A polarizing beamsplitting dielectric coating is deposited on the hypotenuse of one of the prisms, and an anti-reflection coating is deposited on the outer surface. It can split incident unpolarized light into two beams of perpendicular linearly polarized light, in which the P-polarized light passes through completely, and the S-polarized light is reflected at 45 degrees, with the exit direction forming a 90-degree angle with the P-polarized light.
