Plano-concave lens
A plano-concave lens has one plane and one concave surface and a negative focal length. It commonly diverges collimated input light; the beam should enter the curved surface to minimize spherical aberration. Its virtual-image formation and divergence suit the input element of a Galilean beam expander, followed by a cemented lens to recollimate the beam. Optical systems can pair positive and negative lenses so their aberrations cancel, and lens pairs can increase a converging lens's effective focal length.
