Three-port optical circulator
A three-port optical circulator is an optical device designed so that light entering any port exits from the next port. Working principle: if light enters port 1, it is emitted from port 2; but if some of the emitted light is reflected back into the circulator, it does not exit from port 1 but from port 3. Fiber optic circulators are used to separate optical signals traveling in opposite directions in a fiber, for example, to achieve bidirectional transmission on one fiber. Due to their high isolation of input optical power and reflected optical power and their low insertion loss, optical circulators are widely used in advanced communication systems and fiber optic sensor applications.
