Low-order waveplates (multi-order waveplates) are made from single-crystal quartz plates and are designed to provide a retardation of several full waves plus the desired fraction. They come in two types: half-wave plates and quarter-wave plates. Low-order waveplates are more susceptible to wavelength changes and therefore should not be used more than a few nanometers away from the design wavelength.
