The Germanium (Ge) Optical Window is a precision infrared-transmitting protective window manufactured from optical-grade germanium crystal. Although it appears dark gray-brown and is fully opaque to visible light, it offers excellent transmission in the infrared spectrum from 2μm to 16μm, making it an ideal front protective element for MWIR and LWIR optical systems. Both surfaces are precision polished to low-scatter optical quality, and broadband anti-reflection (AR) coatings can be applied to raise the transmittance in the 8-12μm band to 95% or higher. With a high refractive index (~4.0), high Knoop hardness and stable, non-hygroscopic chemistry, germanium windows provide reliable sealing and protection for thermal imaging sensors, FLIR payloads and infrared instruments, even in harsh outdoor environments.
