The bare-fiber adapter is a simple aid for fiber testing. Its core and through-hole contain no epoxy or medium. Bare fiber is easy to insert, remove and reuse, with low insertion loss. It is well suited to emergency fiber repairs and temporary connections.

A mode-field adapter (MFA) changes the optical properties of a fiber to match the fiber being spliced, reducing splice loss. This can be achieved in either of two ways: tapering a larger core to match a smaller core, or expanding a smaller core by heating before or during splicing.
