High-voltage withstand testing prevents PCB breakdown under transient high voltages, such as at power-on or, in more extreme cases, lightning strikes. Aluminum-base PCBs that have not undergone withstand testing must not be used because they pose a major safety hazard. Breakdown voltage (V): the power-frequency voltage at which a sample breaks down when voltage is increased continuously and uniformly, expressed in kV. Breakdown strength (E): the sample breakdown voltage divided by the average specimen thickness between the two electrodes, expressed in kV/mm.
