An optical isolator is a passive magneto-optical device transmitting in only one direction. Polarization rotates in a transparent material placed in a magnetic field, with direction determined by the field rather than propagation, making rotation nonreciprocal. A fiber or Faraday isolator passes forward light with low loss and deflects returning light. Rotation materials include YIG, mainly above 1100nm, and TGG, mainly below 1100nm. Return light can cause source intensity noise or damage; isolators protect sources and are widely used in laser systems. Maibo has developed inline isolators for different applications.
