Germanium
Germanium is a metallic element with a high melting point, high hardness, low electrical conductivity and high corrosion resistance. Germanium has an atomic number of 32 and an atomic weight of 72.64. Germanium is a silvery-white solid at room temperature and easily oxidized at high temperatures. Due to its high melting point and hardness, germanium has excellent performance in manufacturing infrared optical elements. Germanium can be used for both long-wave infrared and mid-wave infrared, and its dispersion characteristics vary significantly in different bands: the Abbe number of germanium in 3~5μm is 103, and it is generally a negative element in optical systems; while its Abbe number in 8~12μm is 864, and it is generally a positive element in optical systems.
