Glan-Thompson polarizer
The Glan–Thompson polarizer comprises two cemented calcite or a-BBO prisms and covers 200-2300nm. a-BBO versions support 200-1100nm, and calcite versions support 350-2300nm. It offers higher extinction than air-spaced polarizers and a large acceptance angle; the a-BBO Glan–Thompson acceptance angle exceeds 15 degrees.

Chenzheng Optoelectronics supplies Glan-laser prisms in calcite, a-BBO, YVO4 and other materials. Designed for high-energy lasers, they have two side escape windows, very high damage thresholds and somewhat higher extinction than ordinary Glan–Taylor prisms. Transmitted light is pure P polarization; side-window output contains pure S polarization and a small P component. Applications include using both polarizations or combining two polarized beams.

Linear polarization can be undesirable in optical systems such as reflective spectrometers, where it affects detector sensitivity. A depolarizer scrambles polarization into a mixture of states, producing pseudo-depolarized light for polarization-sensitive instruments. Conventional depolarizers generally operate over narrow wavelength bands to avoid large beam deviations. This special design supports broad wavelength ranges while keeping deviation acceptable. Orienting the input polarization at 45° to the optical axis generally improves results. Effectiveness also increases with beam cross-sectional size.
