Microspherical Lens
Sandi Optoelectronics makes microlenses from optical-glass substrates with minimum diameter 0.1mm. What is a microlens? These small lenses range from tens of micrometers to a few millimeters in diameter. Curvature focuses or diverges light. Convex lenses, thicker centrally and thinner at the edges, refract parallel rays to a focus; concave lenses, thinner centrally and thicker at the edges, diverge them. Small size and distinctive optical properties enable many applications. Shapes include spherical, cylindrical and conical forms. Combining microlenses creates complex microscopes, telescopes and lasers. Applications include communications, medical imaging, displays, optical inspection and bioengineering. This important optical technology will expand further as it develops.
